EP 39.  Balancing Nature's Elements in a Tech Driven World with Dr. Howard Walsdorf

On episode 39 of the “Everyday Epigenetics: Raw, Real, Relatable” podcast, I sat down with Dr. Howard Wahlsdorf, a holistic chiropractor and natural healer with over 40 years of experience. He's the founder of the Four Element Institute and the Growing Holistically Community, and a passionate advocate for integrating the ancient wisdom of fire, air, water, and earth into modern living. We explored how technology affects our health and how reconnecting with these elements can help us find balance.

The Tension Between Modern and Primitive Poles
We kicked things off by discussing AI-based health platforms. While they incorporate various sciences like embryology and chronobiology, they can make us a bit lazy. Dr. Walsdorf expanded on this idea, mentioning how technology has made us "soft" and less engaged with life’s basics. He described our lives as being split between the “modern pole” (technology) and the “primitive pole” (nature).

The gap between these poles is causing stress and imbalance. Dr. Walsdorf believes that connecting more with nature can help restore balance, without completely giving up modern conveniences.

Childhood Versus Modern Stimulation
I reminisced about my own childhood, filled with outdoor activity, which contrasts sharply with today's tech-focused youth. Dr. Walsdorf compared modern screen-time stimulation to consuming sugar—a quick but harmful way to get energy that increases anxiety among young people. He stressed the importance of outdoor play and face-to-face interactions for a healthier, more balanced childhood.

Denatured Living and Reconnecting with Nature
We also talked about what Dr. Walsdorf calls being "denatured"—living in environments that lack natural influences. He shared his own struggle to get his son interested in outdoor activities, which is a challenge many parents face today. He sees it as part of a larger mission to reconnect young people with nature.

The Four Elements and Their Role in Holistic Health
Dr. Walsdorf’s philosophy revolves around the four elements: fire, air, water, and earth. He believes these elements are crucial for balance in life and nature and can be related to various states of matter seen in physics and genetics.
- Fire represents the nervous system and creativity.
- Air symbolizes space and muscles.
- Water is linked to blood and nourishment.
- Earth stands for bones and physical structure.
Engaging with these elements can be simple—think walking barefoot, practicing yoga, or eating nutrient-rich foods. Each of these activities helps align us with nature.
Posture and Technology
We also discussed how technology affects our physical health. I shared my worries about poor posture caused by heavy cell phone use. Dr. Walsdorf explained that poor posture can lead to long-term issues like neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s. He emphasized the importance of good posture for building resilience and overall health.
Resiliency Through Lifestyle Changes
We talked a lot about resilience, which Dr. Walsdorf described as the ability to handle genetic imperfections and weaknesses. Lifestyle changes—like improving diet, exercise, and mental attitude—are crucial for this. We both agreed that fear and stress are harmful and advocated for a more self-aware, resilient approach to life.
Nutritional Balance and Diverse Diet
Dr. Walsdorf stressed a balanced approach to nutrition, highlighting the often-overlooked benefits of herbs and spices. I talked about my work with PH360, which recommends nutrient-dense diets rather than just focusing on macros. We both emphasized the importance of 'eating the rainbow'—consuming a variety of colorful foods for their different nutritional benefits.
In today’s tech-dominated world, it’s easy to feel disconnected from nature. But as Dr. Walsdorf and I discussed, reconnecting with the four elements can bring about balance and well-being. Whether it’s through correcting posture, adjusting diet, or spending more time outdoors, the path to balance is both ancient and accessible.
