What if the reason you can’t sleep, can’t focus, feel constantly overwhelmed, or struggle to recover isn’t because you’re lacking willpower, but because your brain has become stuck in survival mode?
Many of us spend years trying to fix the symptoms. We change our diets, take more supplements, exercise harder, and search for the next protocol that promises to be the missing piece. But what if the real issue isn’t in another supplement bottle? What if it starts with the way your brain has adapted to years of chronic stress?
In Part 1 of this two-part episode of Everyday Epigenetics: Raw. Real. Relatable., Susan Robbins sits down with Dr. Jackie Kilraine, chiropractor, board-certified neurofeedback specialist, and fellow epigenetic human performance coach, to explore how our brains respond to stress and why that response has a profound impact on nearly every aspect of our health.
Your Brain Is Always Listening
One of the most fascinating parts of this conversation is learning that your brain is constantly adapting to the environment around it.
Stressful experiences, unresolved trauma, lack of sleep, chronic overwhelm, and even years of living in “go mode” can create patterns in the brain that become your new normal. Over time, your brain begins operating as though danger is always present, even when you’re completely safe.
Dr. Kilraine explains how these dysregulated brain patterns can show up as anxiety, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating, chronic pain, emotional reactivity, and an inability to truly relax. For many people, this becomes so familiar that they don’t realize their brain has been stuck in survival mode for years.
Why Treating Symptoms Isn’t Enough
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is that symptoms rarely exist in isolation.
When the brain becomes dysregulated, the effects ripple throughout the entire body. You may notice changes in mood, energy, focus, sleep, or physical health, but those symptoms often share the same underlying driver.
Instead of asking, “How do I get rid of this symptom?” Susan and Dr. Kilraine encourage listeners to ask a different question: “What is my brain trying to protect me from?”
That shift in perspective opens the door to a more compassionate, and often more effective, approach to healing.
A New Way to Think About Healing
Dr. Kilraine also introduces listeners to neurofeedback, a tool designed to help retrain the brain toward healthier, more regulated patterns. Rather than simply managing symptoms, neurofeedback focuses on helping the brain learn new ways of functioning so it can move out of chronic survival mode and into a state that supports healing, resilience, and optimal performance.
This episode is a reminder that your brain isn’t working against you, it’s working to protect you based on what it has learned. And the encouraging news is that those patterns are not permanent.
Be sure to join us next week for Part 2, where Susan and Dr. Kilraine dive even deeper into the connection between the brain, the immune system, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, PTSD, and neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. It’s a conversation that will change the way you think about health from the inside out.
