114.Why Chronic Infections Persist & How Herbs Help with Dr. Bill Rawls (Part 2)

In Part 2 of my conversation with Dr. Bill Rawls, we dive into something that many people dealing with chronic symptoms have experienced: infections that don’t seem to fully go away.

Why does this happen?

The answer may lie in how certain microbes behave inside the body.

Not All Microbes Act the Same

Many people are familiar with acute infections. These are the ones that hit quickly, like pneumonia or strep throat. The bacteria grow rapidly, symptoms appear fast, and antibiotics can often resolve the issue in a short time.

But some microbes operate very differently.

Dr. Rawls explains that pathogens associated with chronic illness, like those involved in Lyme disease, often grow very slowly and use a strategy called persistence. Instead of aggressively multiplying, they quietly establish a presence in the body and can remain dormant inside cells.

This allows them to evade the immune system and stay hidden for long periods of time.

When the body experiences stress, poor sleep, chronic inflammation, toxin exposure, or nutritional deficiencies, these microbes can reactivate and begin damaging cells.

This is one reason chronic symptoms can appear months or even years after the initial exposure.

Why Antibiotics Aren’t Always the Full Solution

Antibiotics are incredibly valuable tools for treating acute infections. They have saved countless lives.

However, they are designed to target fast-growing bacteria.

Slow-growing microbes that hide inside cells can be much harder for antibiotics to reach. At the same time, repeated antibiotic use can disrupt the gut microbiome and contribute to antibiotic resistance.

This is why many people dealing with long-term infections begin exploring additional approaches to support their health.

How Herbs Support the Body Differently

One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation was learning how herbs work in a fundamentally different way than pharmaceuticals.

Instead of containing a single active compound, herbs contain hundreds of plant chemicals that work together.

These compounds can:

• Support the body’s defense against microbes
• Protect cells and mitochondria from damage
• Reduce inflammation
• Help the body adapt to stress

Many herbs, like Japanese knotweed, cat’s claw, andrographis, and medicinal mushrooms, have been studied for their ability to provide broad-spectrum support while also protecting cellular health.

The Bigger Picture: Supporting the Terrain

Perhaps the most important takeaway from this episode is that healing isn’t just about eliminating microbes.

It’s about strengthening the terrain of the body.

When cells are well supported through nutrition, sleep, movement, stress management, and targeted herbal support, the body is far better equipped to keep microbes in check.

And that’s where true resilience begins.
