Your Body Already Knows How to Detox
The wellness world has turned detoxing into a full-blown fear economy.
Heavy metals. Mold. Parasites. “Toxic overload.” Social media feeds are flooded with protocols, cleanses, powders, supplements, and programs promising to purge your body and finally make you feel better. And when you already feel exhausted, inflamed, anxious, bloated, or stuck, it’s easy to believe the answer must be another detox.
In this episode of the Everyday Epigenetics podcast, Susan Robbins challenges that entire narrative.
Not because toxins are fake. Not because mold, parasites, or heavy metals don’t exist. Susan has personally dealt with several of them herself. But what she sees over and over again is something different: depleted bodies being pushed into even more stress under the label of “healing.”
Detoxing While Depleted
Most people are not walking around with a body that has forgotten how to detox.
They are walking around chronically stressed, undernourished, sleep deprived, hormonally dysregulated, overstimulated, and completely disconnected from the rhythms their body actually needs.
The body already has built-in detox systems. The liver, kidneys, gut, skin, lymphatic system, and brain are working around the clock to filter and clear waste. What these systems need is support. Stable blood sugar. Nutrients. Hydration. Sleep. Nervous system regulation. Consistency.
Instead, many people are piling harsh cleanses, restrictive protocols, and endless supplements onto a system that is already overwhelmed.
That is where things start breaking down.
The Missing Piece: Genetics & Personalization
One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is Susan’s breakdown of the genetic side of detoxification.
Genes like MTHFR, COMT, PEMT, GST, IL6, and TNF-alpha all influence how the body processes stress, inflammation, hormones, toxins, and nutrients. Two people can follow the exact same protocol and have completely different outcomes because their biology is different.
This is why one-size-fits-all detoxes can create more chaos than clarity.
A body stuck in fight-or-flight cannot detox efficiently. A nervous system living in fear changes everything from bile flow to hormone conversion to inflammation signaling.
Building Resilience Instead of Fear
This episode is not about convincing people to ignore their health.
It’s about helping people stop treating their body like it’s broken.
Real wellness is not built through panic. It’s built through rhythm, nourishment, recovery, movement, sleep, emotional safety, and understanding your own biology.
Your body was designed to detox.
The question is whether your lifestyle is helping it do that… or constantly getting in the way.
