138. Two Sisters. Shared Genes. Two Very Different Health Journeys Part 2: Leslie’s Story

Leslie knew a lot about natural health. She researched. She experimented. She tried to make healthy choices and understand what was happening inside her body.

Eventually, it became exhausting.

Despite everything she knew, her weight continued climbing. Her energy disappeared. Brain fog and memory issues made it difficult to think clearly, and two- to three-hour naps became part of her daily life. Hormone therapy seemed like it might finally provide answers, but even that wasn’t addressing the complete picture and created new issues.

In Part 2 of this special sister series on Everyday Epigenetics: Raw. Real. Relatable., Leslie shares what happened when she stopped trying to figure everything out herself and started looking at what her body was actually telling her.

Healthy Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

One of the biggest revelations in Leslie’s journey was realizing that something can be considered healthy and still not work for your individual biology.

Through genetics, deeper lab work, and lifestyle assessment, Susan began connecting Leslie’s symptoms with factors including insulin resistance, thyroid function, hormone metabolism, stress response, inflammation, and the way her body processed certain foods.

Instead of adding another supplement or chasing another symptom, the focus shifted toward helping her entire system function better.

Progress Is Bigger Than the Scale

Leslie has now lost 37 pounds, but one of the most powerful moments in her story has nothing to do with weight loss.

During one extraordinarily difficult month, Leslie lost her five-year-old dog, welcomed twin grandchildren, and helped care for her mother after a concussion. Previously, that amount of stress could have sent her health spiraling.

This time, she maintained her weight. She kept her energy. She didn’t return to taking hours-long naps every day. Her body handled the stress differently.

That is progress.

Getting Your Life Back

Today, Leslie can get up, attend morning Mass, go for a walk, run errands, care for her family, and continue with her day without immediately needing to crash.

She describes it as having a sense of adventure in her life again.

Her transformation is an important reminder that symptoms shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as getting older. Sometimes you don’t need to try harder or find another wellness trend. You need to understand why your body is responding the way it is.
