139. Low Iron? You Might Be Asking the Wrong Question with Morley Robbins

We’ve been taught to see a low number on a blood test and immediately ask how to bring it back up.

Low iron? Add iron. Low ferritin? Increase iron. Feeling exhausted? Maybe you’re anemic.

But the human body is rarely that simple.

In this episode of Everyday Epigenetics: Raw. Real. Relatable., I sit down with Morley Robbins, founder of the Root Cause Protocol and author of Cure Your Fatigue, for a deep conversation about iron dysregulation, copper, energy production, and why he believes we need to rethink some commonly accepted ideas about mineral health.

Iron Is Only One Piece of the Story

One of Morley’s central arguments is that we focus heavily on getting enough iron without paying nearly enough attention to how the body regulates and recycles it.

Iron doesn’t operate independently. Morley explains the important role copper plays in iron metabolism and introduces us to ceruloplasmin, a copper-containing protein involved in moving iron through the body.

This creates a much bigger question: When iron or ferritin appears low on bloodwork, is simply adding more iron always the answer, or should we be investigating why those markers are low?

Minerals, Mitochondria, and Energy

Our conversation quickly moves beyond iron.

We explore the relationship between copper and mitochondrial energy production, along with vitamin A, thyroid function, histamine, methylation, stress, supplementation, and genetic expression.

This is where the conversation becomes especially relevant to epigenetics.

Your genes don’t exist in isolation. Your nutrition, stress, environment, metabolic health, and ability to produce energy are constantly interacting with your biology. A genetic variant may show us a potential vulnerability, but it doesn’t automatically tell us what is happening inside your body today.

Stop Chasing One Number

I don’t believe good health comes from blindly following one marker, one supplement, or one expert. It comes from learning how to investigate the bigger picture.

Morley brings strong perspectives to this conversation, and some challenge conventional approaches to iron, supplementation, and mineral health. That’s exactly why this discussion is worth having.

We need to stay curious. We need to understand mechanisms. And we need to ask better questions before assuming that changing one number will solve everything.

If you’ve struggled with fatigue, low iron, ferritin issues, thyroid concerns, or unexplained symptoms, this episode will give you an entirely different lens through which to consider what your body may be telling you.
